How to Hack Any Wii 4.3 (Part 3)

November 16, 2011

Step 1. Format your SD card

A. Put your SD Card into your laptop or computer.
B. From ‘My Computer’ or ‘Computer,’ right-click your SD card and select Format.
C. Make sure its set to FAT32 and that Quick Format is checked off and click START>OK>OK>Close.

Step 2. Download 4.3 Hack Pack onto your SD card

A. Click here to download 4.3 Hack Pack.
B. Having both your SD card and the 4.3 Hack Pack download open, Copy all the files from 4.3 Hack Pack to your SD card by “dragging and dropping.”

Step 3. Install IOS236, WAD files, and PriiLoader

Note: If you receive this error after loading YAWMM: Exception (DSI) occurred!

  • You need to put your SD card back into your computer and go to the wad folder (SD:/wad) and delete wm_config.
  • Put SD card back into your Wii and load YAWMM again.
  • Manually install IOS236 from your SD card, and this should install all the WADs automatically.

A. Turn on your Wii and put your SD card into it.
B. Go to the HBC (Homebrew Channel) and select Start.
C. On the next screen, select IOS236 Installer v5 MOD>Load. Wait a bit.
D. After that’s done, select YAWMM Multimod Batch>Load. Wait bit longer.
E After that’s done, select Priiloader 236 Mod>Load. Then press A on the next screen.
F. After you are sent back again, hold down the Reset button on your Wii to load Priiloader.

Step 4. Configure Priiloader

Note: If for some reason Priiloader crashes, simply turn off your Wii by holding down the Power button until the light turns red. Then press the power button to turn it back on then hold down the reset button for a few seconds to load Priiloader again.

A. Once Priiloader is loaded, select System Menu Hacks.
B. Enable: Block Disc UpdatesBlock Online UpdatesAuto-press A at Health Screen, and Region Free EVERYTHING. Finally, select Save Settings.
C. Now back at the Priiloader menu, select System Menu. You can go ahead and turn off your Wii and remove the SD card.

If it is a game update, it will no brick your Wii. Only the official Nintendo System Menu Updates will brick.

Just wanted to say thanks and share my experience with this section to hopefully help others.
1. I was stuck at the Priiloader screen. I thought it was frozen but then I found if I pressed the ‘home’ window it would abort… meaning it wasn’t frozen! So then I tried the alternate button ‘+’ instead of ‘A’ and it went through!

2. I was confused at the ‘reset for 3 seconds’ part, it wasn’t clear to me at all. What this means is, once the Priiloader goes through it’s install, power down, power back up and hold reset for 3 seconds and the Wii will boot to the Priiloader screen.

Again, thanks a LOT for the write up. While doing my research I came across another write up that was just horrible in comparison.

I would like to say thanks for all the information and guidance provided. It is really the most detailed step by step tutorial.

Just a question: Just after the priloader is loaded I have the following message:
passwword file: Not found
Setting file: Not found.
In the video above it says Settings file: Detected.
Is this a problem?

Also in step4 the syetm menu hacks brings a lot of entries to enable or disable.

Once more thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks for the help. I have completed everything and it’s working. Fantastic!!!

Could you please explain how to have USBLGX on the main menu screen of the wii like the homebrew screen so it will be easier to load it?

I have read in the internet about channel or forwarder. I didn’t understand which is better and how exactly to do it.

Thanks a lot

First of all, read the troubleshooting section to see if your Wii console can support burned DVDs. If it can, then you can download Neogamma to load from DVD.

You should reformat your SD card and recopy the files over again.

Reply

homebrewpirate December 28, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Have you unplugged unnecessary peripherals like Wii Motion Plus, GC memory cards, Nunchuk, etc? If you have a built in Wii Motion Plus, then you need to borrow a regular Wiimote without one from a friend and finish softmodding (you won’t need it after you’re done softmodding).

i am up to the point of installing YAWMM, and i get the choice of ios 236, (249 by default). i choose the 236 and i get the DSI exception. i have deleted the file you suggested, but still i get the same problem. How shall i proceed?

Reply

homebrewpirate December 28, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Have you disconnected Nunchuk, Wii Motion Plust, GC memory cards, etc? Try reformatting your SD card and recopying the files over. If that doesn’t work, you should try other SD/SDHC cards.

Thanks for the easy to follow steps. I’m curious though. What does Hack Pack and the others (ie: PriiLoader) do? Can I play downloaded games using Homebrew channel only or do I have to download all the other components?

Reply

homebrewpirate December 13, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Hack Pack installs the necessary files to allow Homebrew applications like USB Loader GX to work correctly. Priiloader, which is included in the hack pack, protects your Wii from “bricking,” or, breaking by blocking Nintendo System Menu updates that try to remove the Homebrew Channel. And when Nintendo tries to do this, there is a potential brick.

First of all, you need to finish parts 2 and 3 before you can really do anything. The Homebrew Channel by itself is useless–you need homebrew applications like USB Loader GX (play games from USB) or NeoGamma (play burned DVD games). My guide focuses on USB Loader GX because not all Wiis can support burned DVDs. All Wiis can load from USB though. To check if your WIi can play burned DVDs, go here.

Download hacks_hash.ini here (Right-click and Save link as…) and put it on the root of the SD card AND your priiloader folder, then re-install Priiloader. You should then have Block Online Updates, which is the only thing you really need.

Try removing nunchuck, Wii Motion Plus (if it’s built in try a regular Wiimote), and other things you don’t need like GC memory card, game discs, etc.

If that doesn’t work, try reformatting SD card, other SD or SDHC cards, and re-install the WAD files and Priiloader.

Reply

homebrewpirate December 13, 2011 at 1:33 pm

You should test to see which one has better compatibility with your games. They’re both safe.

Reply

homebrewpirate December 13, 2011 at 1:35 pm

It’s not necessary to block disc updates, because they actually won’t brick your Wii (as demonstrated when I downloaded the CoD:BO disc update to play online without problems). So if you have block online updates, that’s all that’s necessary to prevent the one thing that can brick your Wii.

Hi, I follow the steps but I keep getting the exception (DSI) occurred error. I followed your fix for it but it still won’t work. Is this because I’m using a 512mb SD card instead of something larger or should I still be able to do it?

Reply

homebrewpirate December 11, 2011 at 7:46 pm

If you didn’t do so already, you should disconnect anything you’re not using, such as Wii Motion Plus, Nunchuk, GC memory cards, game discs, etc. and try again. If that didn’t work, try reformatting and re-copying the files over again. If that fails, you definitely should try a standard 1 or 2GB SD card. People had success using SDHC cards as well, so you might want to give SDHC a shot.

I’ve softmodded my wii and been playing on it for a few days now. I put in a game that I own (Jeopardy) and it’s telling me I have to update my wii in order to play the game. It says “If your wii console includes unauthorized modifications, this update may detect and remove unauthorized content causing immediate or delayed inoperability of your console. Failure to accept this update may also render this and future games unplayable. If you do no wish to accept this update, you can hold down the power button for 4 seconds.”

What should I do?

Reply

homebrewpirate December 11, 2011 at 7:39 pm

You will lose your homebrew stuff after you update, so if you don’t want to re-softmod again, don’t update. It is really a question of: is playing Jeopardy worth spending the time to re-softmod?

I guess since the hacks_hash.ini was copied onto NAND (your Wii), it doesn’t matter if you upload another hacks_hash onto the SD, since the Wii reads from NAND instead of the SD in this case. I’d recommend that you run Priiloader 236 Mod again with the new hacks_hash.ini so that your Wii can copy it to NAND.

It looks like you are trying to manually install individual WADs (a fix for the DSI error). Theoretically you could install all wads by choosing to manually install IOS236 inside YAWMM. If that doesn’t work, you might want to try different SD cards, or reformatting your current one and re-copying over the files again.

You first need to find out if your Wii can play burned DVDs here.

If your Wii can support burned DVDs, then you can download NeoGamma (Homebrew application) and load them from there.

Just a quick one, I was also having issues with hacks_hash.ini not being found and didn’t have much luck using the link in the confirmed fix above.
I used the file from here: http://priiloader.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/priiloader/hacks_hash.ini
copied it to root of SD card and also to /apps/priiloader/hacks_hash.ini and it loaded up OK with ton more options :-)

Reply

homebrewpirate November 30, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Thanks for confirming, Mark. Apparently you need to have hacks_hash.ini in the root of the SD card AND the priiloader folder. I don’t know if Mark’s link to hacks_hash.ini will work for all Wiis on 4.3, so you can find a hacks_hash.ini that works for all 4.3 here (Right-click and Save link as…). It doesn’t have the block disc update option, but it’s OK because sometimes you need to in order to play games like CoD:BO. The only hack you really want is the Block Online Updates because they will brick your Wii.

I keep trying this..
Put SD card back into your Wii and load YAWMM again.
Manually install IOS236 from your SD card, and this should install all the WADs automatically.
But those steps seem backwards, if not how do I load it manually?

Looks like you should try other SD or SDHC cards, or try reformatting and recopying the files over. When you go to the HBC you should see the apps.

Can you explain what you did before you got the black screen? Which Part(s) and step(s) did you do?

The only thing I can think of right now is that you enabled “Force Standard Recovery Mode” in Priiloader. If you did, disable it and see what happens when you go to the System Menu from PriiLoader.

I want to say thanks!! This was the best step by step guide I have ever used. The videos were very helpful also. I used both to complete the task. You ROCK!! My kids are so excited and started using the mod right away. Thanks again for all your hard work. : )
